In Philippine mythology, Tala is the goddess of the morning and evening star, which is also the traditional shape of a “parol” – bright lanterns that light up the streets and houses during Christmas season, a symbol of hope in the darkest of nights. The craftsmanship behind every intricate design of a parol showcases the resilience of the Filipino people, their creative talent as vast and as deep as the seas that surround the islands they live in. Spot the dashing dugong, the gentle giant leatherback turtle and a plethora of rich and colorful marine life luminous above the coral reef in this design that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

This design was our first foray into Filipino culture and tradition. Its main subject is a “diwata,” known in Philippine mythology as a goddess or spirit guardian of a region. She is inspired by Maria Makiling, one of the most popular Filipino diwatas and the protector of Mount Makiling in the Laguna province. Surrounded by Philippine botanicals, she is believed to protect the bounty of the land. The soft peaks and valleys of the mountain is said to be seen in the gentle slope of her sleeping form.

A fiesta with no lechon is no fiesta at all. Often the centerpiece of the buffet spread in Filipino gatherings, the lechon draws the most ‘oooohs’ and ‘aaaahs’ from dinner guests waiting to dig in. Cut me some of the decadent crispy skin, please!
